How Does the 2022 Volkswagen Atlas Compare to Other SUVs in its Class?

Sendell Volkswagen is excited to offer Greenburg car-buyers the new 2022 Volkswagen Atlas as a leader in the most popular vehicle segment: mid-size SUVs. If you're considering a new VW Atlas purchase and want to know how it stands up to the competition in Pittsburgh, you're in luck! We've prepared a helpful performance, design, and feature comparison between the new VW Atlas and its rivals, the Subaru Ascent, Honda Pilot, and Mazda CX-9, to help you see what makes the new Atlas a great option.

Trims and Performance

The new VW Atlas and Mazda CS-9 both offer six trim levels, while the Ascent and Pilot come in five trims, which means you'll have plenty of options from which to choose.

The VW Atlas standard powertrain is a 2.0-liter inline-four engine producing 235 horsepower and 258 pound-feet of torque. A second powertrain is available for select trims: a 3.6-liter V6 engine producing 276 horsepower. The other SUV models only offer a single powertrain option. The Atlas and Pilot have a front-wheel driveline system compared to the all-wheel-drive with the Ascent and CX-9. Although the Ascent and Pilot create slightly more power and torque, the new VW Atlas still provides spirited driving experiences. All four SUVs have a 23 mpg combined fuel economy rating, with at least 25 mpg on the highway.

Interior and Cargo

The new VW Atlas, like the CX-9, is a three-row SUV and comfortably seats up to seven passengers, while the Ascent and Pilot seating configurations have room for an extra passenger. The standard upholstery in the Atlas is a high-quality leatherette compared to cloth in the Subaru and Mazda, while the Honda has leather seats. In all four SUVs, heated seats are standard, with cooled and ventilated seats available on other trims. There's an optional sunroof available for the new VW Atlas, also available for the Ascent and CX-9 but standard on the Pilot.

The second and third rows in each of these SUVs easily fold flat to expand the storage space. The new VW Atlas has the most significant cargo space behind the third row at 20.6 cubic feet, three to six cubic feet more than the others without sacrificing passengers' head, leg, and shoulder space, making the Atlas more spacious all passengers.

Technology

Although all four SUVs come with an array of technology features, the new Volkswagen Atlas is the most standard-equipped. For convenience, Bluetooth connectivity and smartphone integration are standards in the VW Atlas and other SUVs. Keyless entry and Ignition are also standard for the Volkswagen Atlas, and on select trims, a navigation system and Adaptive Cruise Control are standard-equipped for all four SUVs. Customers can also get an available navigation system on other styles for each model.

Depending on the trim you select, The VW Atlas and Subaru Ascent will come with either a 6.5- or 8-inch infotainment touchscreen display compared to the 10.25-inch touchscreen display in the Mazda CX-9. The Atlas comes equipped with a Wi-Fi hotspot for better connectivity.
